MEET THE CAST OF THE WEDDING SINGER!

The Arlington Players is proud to announce that casting for its fall musical, The Wedding Singer, is complete and rehearsals are about to begin!

Based on the popular 1998 romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the stage version follows the story of rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart, everyone's favorite wedding singer.  But when his own fiancée leaves him at the altar, Robbie’s life falls apart until he meets Julia, a winsome waitress engaged to a Wall Street player.  Set against the soundtrack of the 1980s and amongst a cast of characters that includes colorful friends, family and cameo “appearances” by 80s icons, will Robbie and Julia find love after all?

With a book by Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy (based on Herlihy’s screenplay), music by Matthew Sklar and Lyrics by Chad Beguelin, The Wedding Singer was nominated for five Tony Awards in 2006 including Best Musical.

The multi-WATCH Award winning team of Director/Choreographer John Monnett and Music Director John-Michael d’Haviland reunite for their eighth TAP collaboration together and are joined by Producer Barbara Esquibel and Stage Manager Terri Carnahan.

The 26-member cast includes six “new” faces and twenty “veterans” of the TAP stage including eight who made their TAP debut last season (2013-2014).  “All total, the returning cast members have appeared 62 times in TAP shows,” remarks John Monnett.  “There was so much talent to choose from and some very difficult decisions, but I'm delighted with this cast.”

TAP auditioned and will begin rehearsals for the fall show (opening Friday, October 3) earlier than in previous years because of the unique musical requirements of the stage show.  “Being in a wedding band, the three principal men – Robbie, Sammy and George – will be playing instruments with the show band onstage.   We wanted to make sure they had time to learn the music and be comfortable with playing live,” explains Monnett. “The extra time will also allow the costume and wig designers plenty of time to create the ‘80s looks this show requires.”

John Monnett admits that the timeframe of the show – being set in the 1980s – was a draw for him.  “The big hair and neon fashion help characterize this Flashdance and Dynasty decade,” says Monnett.  “But the music is the biggest draw… The Wedding Singer pays loving homage to the pop songs and videos of the 1980s back when MTV actually played videos. It’s a musically diverse period as well, we all made mix-tapes with everything from Madonna, Michael Jackson, Culture Club, New Edition, Dire Straits, a-ha, Flock of Seagulls, Van Halen, and Whitesnake to name a few.”

With its upbeat music and colorful spectacle, TAP audiences will enjoy most The Wedding Singer’s romantic story.  TAP is proud to have John Monnett and the rest of production team and cast bring this romantic musical comedy to Arlington audiences.
